2008 Recipient
This year’s recipients of the 2008 First Achievement Award scholarships are Broken Arrow High
School seniors, Danielle Delso and Aaron Wright.
The First National Bank & Trust Co. of Broken Arrow is honored to uphold the tradition of
recognizing academic excellence by presenting Delso and Wright with an $8,000 scholarship, which
can apply to any accredited college or university – payable over eight consecutive semesters.
First National Bank of Broken Arrow created the scholarships to assist students, whose families
are bank customers and who represent the total aspects (good grades, good character) of being
a good student.
Delso plans to attend the University of Oklahoma in the fall, majoring in dentistry with the hope
of becoming an orthodontist.
"I plan on coming back to the Broken Arrow area and becoming an active member of the
community that has shaped me into the young woman I have become today," she said.
Her accolades include selected for Peer Tutoring Program; Selected for Leadership Class; Nominated
for Wendy's Heisman Award for Academics and Scholarship; National Honor Roll; National Society
of High School Scholars; Outstanding Biology Student; Recommended for Sir Alexander Fleming
Program; Outstanding High School Student-of-the-Month; and Varsity Tigettes.
Wright's dream is to attend the University of Tulsa in the fall as a pre-medicine major.
"I want to be able to help people from where I come from and that is why my dream is to open my
own family practice in the Tulsa area," he said.
His accolades include Who’s Who Among American High School Students since 9th grade, English
Merit Award and National Honor Society Activity Scholar. Wright has also been involved with the
Science and Spanish clubs as well as Students for Christ and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
2007 Recipient
In 2007 the two winners were Whitney B. Wilson and Hayley Spencer.
Whitney attends the University of Arkansas. Both Hayley Spencer and her parents wrote First National Bank to thank us and let us know what Hayley’s future holds thanks to the FIRST Achievement Scholarship Program.
Thank you so much for selecting me as recipient of your 1st Achievement scholarship award. It helps much more than I can accurately put into words. I am very excited to begin my studies at the University of Oklahoma, and you are very much responsible for that even being possible. I truly cannot thank you enough!
In Itim, Hayley Spencer
My husband and I also want to thank you so much for this opportunity that you’ve given Hayley. It was so wonderful to see her hard work rewarded and I can assure you that she will do a great job at OU and continue to make us all proud.
Thank you, Tim and Phyllis Spencer
In 2001, First National Bank extended the scholarship program to include two winners each year.
2000 Recipient
In 2000 the FIRST Achievement Award Scholarship was awarded to Matthew Garrett. By receiving the FIRST Achievement Award Scholarship, Matthew was able to attend the University of Oklahoma. Recently, Matthew sent a letter to First National Bank, letting us know just how valuable this award was to building his future.
Dear First National Bank,
I hope this letter finds everyone well. I wanted to write a quick note to let you know what your Class of 2000 First Achievement Award scholarship winner was up to. I have wanted to do this for some time now; it just took a little nudging from my mother to encourage me to finally put something down on paper. So….Where should I start?
After graduating from Broken Arrow High School (Go Tigers) I began college at The University of Tulsa. While at TU I earned a Degree in Finance. This may seem simple enough—but, let me promise you being given this opportunity to attend a school such as TU on a single parent teacher budget was quite a big deal. I have no doubt that I will look back on my four years at TU as some of the most amazing and life changing years of my life. Some of my accomplishments during my “tenure” at TU were: a 3.4 GPA, being awarded the Genave Rogers Scholarship, President of the Student Investment Fund, Treasurer of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and being named a Friends of Finance Scholar.
After graduating from The University of Tulsa I was extremely blessed to be offered a trading job for a firm at the American Stock Exchange in New York City. So, in September of 2004 I moved to Manhattan to try my hand at trading on the floor of an exchange—and that’s what I have been doing ever since. I have also continued being a soccer referee achieving National Certification. Trading is such an intense profession; couple that with living in Manhattan and I can say that it’s the perfect combination for me at this point in my life.
Who knows what the future will bring, but what I do know is that I couldn’t have made it here without the amazing and gracious support from First National Bank of Broken Arrow.
Thank you again for all that you have done. I truly cannot say how much it means to me.
With Best Regards,
Matthew A. Garrett
